SUSE Linux Guide for Geeks

What this site is all about

A long time ago I started a book project. People talked me into writing a book on SUSE Linux. Not the usual stuff on how to install it and where to click to get a web browser or an email tool, but something more technical. Kind of a behind he scenes guide to SUSE's Linux distribuition. Not being a native english speaker, but living in the US at the time I found an excellent editor in Terrehon Bowden who did a great job in turning my genglish into actual english.

We kind of finished the book in late 1999. But as it turned out, the book was never printed. There are many reasons to why it came that way, but it all boiles down to the fact that the publishing industry was (is?) not ready for content licensed under something like the Free Documentation License. So we gave up on all the fame and glory of a printed publication and settled with publishing it online. This at least made it available to a large audience and it seems we hit the nerve as we got , and still get, a good number of hits on these pages and quite some positive feedback.

Now we have 6 years and who knows how many versions of SUSE Linux later and being based on SuSE Linux 6.0, the book is pretty outdated by now. This is why I set up this MediaWiki site. I'd like to turn this into a community project. I'd like to get an up-to-date version of the book as a living document for everyone to read, correct and add content. At least that's the idea. I never headed up a documentation project like this one before and am not too experienced with MediaWiki either. So this will be a learning experience for me as well. So please be patient with me. I'm doing this in my free time and even though I work for SUSE (or better Novell) again, this project has nothing to do with my work and is independent from SUSE and Novell.

Stay tuned for the first load of content to show up on this site.

First Big Milestone Reached
All the old content has been moved to the Wiki now. It's not perfect at all,the chapter references are stil mentioning chapter numbers which don't exits in the Wiki, same with tables etc. but still: the content is available and that's what counts.

This represents the first milestone I had for this project.

I'm not sure how exactly I'll go on from here. But eventually the content can be edited by everyone who's interested...
